  • Dance, Senses, and Distrust of the Body A Frank Talk with Miguel Gutierrez

By Miguel Gutierrez as told to Michèle Steinwald

Miguel Gutierrez has a message—and some tips—for people who insist they don’t “get” contemporary dance. Even though he’s gained international acclaim for his own emotionally raw pieces, he admits that they can be hard to understand. During a rare quiet moment on a bus ride from Philadelphia to New York, Gutierrez, one of the most provocative dancemakers of his generation, talked by phone with assistant curator Michèle Steinwald about those and other topics related to his newest piece, And lose the name of action…

  • Hello…

I wanted to create this blog because I felt (whether rightly or not) that this country needed another voice for the critique of contemporary dance. It needs to be questioned further, it needs to be explored in not just the physical realm in which many dance artist/choreographers etc. are dedicated to and with which i have no quarrel; dance artists have for years been furthering their exploration and understanding of dance to the great benefit of other artists and the public. I believe there needs to be more critical eyes watching over its current state, not just to provide criticism of art that is being produced* [*although this does need to be done, especially as the contemporary dance world is HUGE! The barrage of new pieces, perfs. each day/week/month are not being adequately reviewed - new choreographers/companies need the feedback, whether good or bad and also the exposure. Not to mention the ‘big’ companies that need to be notified when their company and its work is not to the standard that the powers that be that fund them seem to think they are] - Oh dear! Sorry for that short?! side note, I clearly don’t have any burning issues. Anyway as I was saying, not only to review dance, but to question it and to explore it, to have an opinion and to discuss it with passion because art is not merely a luxury in life and it can help us to further understand the world.

We’ll see… It’s very probable I could be talking bollocks!

    Until next time…
